Many players assume Mahjong Ways 2 is simply the original with bigger multipliers. The data says otherwise: in both games the free-spin multiplier stops at 10x. What Mahjong Ways 2 changes is the grid, the way count and the ceiling, and those three are what should decide which one you open. The sequel appears in MERRYPH’s popular row, and the original sits on the same PG shelf.
What changed in Mahjong Ways 2
Every figure in this table is taken from PG Soft’s game data.
| Mahjong Ways | Mahjong Ways 2 | |
|---|---|---|
| Grid | 5x4 | 5x4, reels 2-4 one row taller |
| Ways to win | 1,024 | 2,000 |
| RTP | 96.92% | 96.95% |
| Top win | 25,000x | 100,000x |
| Free-spin multiplier | up to 10x | up to 10x |
| Volatility | Medium | Medium |
Three rows of that table moved; three did not. The cascade also becomes an avalanche in the sequel, with golden tiles still turning into wilds as they fall.
What did not change, and why it matters
The 10x free-spin cap is the line people misread. A higher ceiling with the same multiplier cap means the extra headroom comes from more ways and longer chains, not from bigger multipliers.
The other constant is volatility. A 100,000x ceiling on a medium-volatility game is an unusual pairing: the top figure is a rare outlier written into the maths, while day-to-day play feels much like the original.
Problem: choosing the sequel for its “bigger multipliers”. Fix: choose it for 2,000 ways and the higher ceiling, or stay with the original if you prefer the plainer 5x4 grid.
Which Mahjong Ways suits your bankroll
Both share an RTP within 0.03 points, so the bankroll question is really about patience:
- Short session, small budget: either works, but the original Mahjong Ways has fewer moving parts to learn.
- Longer session, steady stake: Mahjong Ways 2 gives more ways per spin for the same price.
- Chasing a headline figure: do not. A 100,000x ceiling at ₱5 is ₱500,000 on paper, and planning a budget around it is how sessions run long.
Testing both side by side
The fairest way to choose is a matched test. Use the same budget, stake and spin count on each game:
| Step | Mahjong Ways | Mahjong Ways 2 |
|---|---|---|
| Budget | ₱400 | ₱400 |
| Stake | ₱4 | ₱4 |
| Spins | 100 | 100 |
| Note down | free-spin rounds seen, end balance | free-spin rounds seen, end balance |
One hundred spins will not reveal either game’s true return; nothing short of a vast number of spins does. It will tell you which grid you enjoy watching, which is the honest basis for the choice.
If neither Mahjong game clicks
The PG shelf has very different alternatives. Lucky Neko’s 6x5 grid shares the 100,000x ceiling but builds multipliers from Cat symbols within a spin. Fortune Tiger and its five lines goes the other way, small and fast. The PG Soft six-game overview compares them all.
Opening Mahjong Ways 2
- Tap it in the popular row.
- To open the original as well, reach the shelf through PG Slots (phone) or through SLOTS, then the PG tile (desktop); both games sit there.
- Load the same ₱400 budget and ₱4 stake on each if you are running the side-by-side test.

How to Get Started
-
Decide what you want more of
More ways per spin and a higher ceiling point to Mahjong Ways 2. A simpler grid with a lower ceiling points to the original.
-
Ignore the multiplier myth
Both games cap the free-spin multiplier at 10x in PG Soft's data. Choose on ways and ceiling, not on a multiplier difference that is not there.
-
Try a fixed batch on each
Play the same number of spins, at the same stake, on each game. Compare how each felt before you settle on one.
