Mahjong Ways pays by chains, not single hits. A win clears its tiles, new tiles drop in, and a second or third win can follow from the same spin. Golden tiles are what keep those chains going, because they turn into wilds. It belongs to the 174-title PG Soft shelf in MERRYPH’s catalogue and opens a two-game series; its sequel sits in the lobby’s popular row.
How Mahjong Ways pays a spin
Every spin follows the same path. Here it is in order:
- The grid. A 5x4 layout paying on 1,024 ways instead of set lines.
- The cascade. Paid tiles vanish, replacements drop in, and the refill can pay again.
- Golden tiles. Golden versions of the symbols transform into wilds, helping the next link in the chain.
- The numbers. PG Soft’s data puts RTP at 96.92%, caps a win at 25,000x and rates volatility medium.
Golden tiles and the cascade chain
A single cascade is worth little on its own. The value builds when one clearance sets up the next, and golden tiles turning wild are the usual reason a chain keeps going.
Problem: a long chain feels like a sign the next spin will chain too. Fix: every spin starts fresh. Treat a long chain as a nice result, not a forecast, and keep the stake where it was.
Free spins: 12 to start, plus 2 per extra Scatter
The free-spin rule is short enough to memorise:
| Scatters | Free spins |
|---|---|
| 3 | 12 |
| 4 | 14 |
| 5 | 16 |
During free spins, wins are multiplied up to 10x, and the multiplier steps up as cascades continue within the round. A long chain inside free spins is where this game’s bigger results come from.
Planning for the free-spin round
The free spins carry the multiplier, so the base game is mostly about lasting until 3 Scatters arrive. Two habits help:
- Choose a stake that gives at least 100 spins. With ₱800, that means ₱8 or less a spin.
- Count features, not wins. Note how many free-spin rounds you see per 100 spins; it tells you more about your session than any single big cascade.
At a ₱8 stake, the 25,000x ceiling would be ₱200,000. It is the edge of the maths, not the purpose of the round.
Mahjong Ways or something else from the shortlist?
If you enjoy the tiles and the chains, three games on the PG shelf are worth comparing:
- The direct sequel: Mahjong Ways 2’s extra row keeps the tiles but counts 2,000 ways and raises the ceiling to 100,000x.
- A bigger free-spin start: Wild Bounty Showdown’s 8x feature begins its free spins at 8x, at high volatility.
- Multipliers inside one spin: Lucky Neko and its Cat symbols builds the multiplier as Cats land.
The PG Soft shortlist page puts all six games in one comparison table.
Finding Mahjong Ways in the lobby
- Phone users tap the PG Slots tile; desktop users pick SLOTS, then the PG tile.
- Find Mahjong Ways in the PG list. The original sits close to its sequel there, so both are easy to compare.
- Before spinning, divide your budget by 100 to get the highest stake that still buys 100 spins.
Account first: the login page for the lobby, then the guide to register, and the download options for phones if you play on mobile. 21+ only.
How to Get Started
-
Spot the golden tiles
Golden versions of the mahjong tiles are the ones that turn wild. Learn to pick them out on the first few spins.
-
Follow one cascade to the end
Watch a winning spin clear, refill and pay again. Once you have seen a full chain, the rest of the game reads easily.
-
Count the Scatters
Three Scatters earn 12 spins and each additional Scatter adds 2. Learn that rule and the feature will never surprise you.
